On World Veterinary Day, Egypt’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Health, Khaled Abdel Ghaffar, underscored the crucial role of veterinarians in public health, environmental sustainability, and animal welfare through the “One Health” approach, which integrates human, animal, and environmental health systems. Speaking at a national event themed “A Unified System for Sustainable Development,” he highlighted veterinarians’ contributions to disease prevention, food safety, and epidemic control.
Abdel Ghaffar emphasized the urgency of cross-sectoral collaboration, citing WHO data that 60% of emerging infectious diseases are zoonotic. He showcased Egypt’s efforts, including the Emergency Center for Transboundary Animal Disease and the National One Health Strategic Framework (2023-2027), aimed at tackling health threats such as zoonoses, antimicrobial resistance, and climate-related risks. The minister called for stronger inter-ministerial cooperation and international partnerships to institutionalize this unified health model.
